Alternating Color Hats and Mittens

This is a fun pattern. I made these hats with spare yarn. I learned how to knit cording while finishing these hats. Alternating color makes the fabric a lot thicker and warmer than single strand. It took me about two about a week to make each hat. 90 st, circular needle #7, box shaping, 80/20 acrylic/wool blend.

My formula for nice fitting hats - gauge (stitches per inch x circumference of head) -18% = stitches to cast on. My head is 22 around, and I knit on a #7 needle 5 stitches per inch so, (22 x 5) - .18 (rounded up or down) = 90 stitches. Works every time. Of course in knitting and crochet gauge is everything.

The mittens I made from 100% wool.
